Mount Lofty House, adelaide hills Australia

stay

Mount Lofty House is a 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for their luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings.

the story

Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is South Australia’s Jay Gatsby; with his wife Martha famously describing their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such grand beginnings the manor passed through several South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons…

the location

30-acre Mount Lofty Estate is home to Mt Lofty House and South Australia’s two highest altitude vineyards, ancient underground Mount Lofty springs, and offers access to a multitude of easy walking paths and moderate hiking trails. Sitting high above the Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills, a region currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. The area’s significance centres on its working agricultural (food and wine) landscapes, historic settlements, abundant wildlife, pure environment, continuing culture and practice.

Arthur's Wine Cellar, the original 170-year-old stone cellar underneath the restaurant is home to some cult wines from South Australia, the Australian continent, and includes some of the great vintages of the European classics.

The Arthur Waterhouse Cocktail Lounge and Champagne Bar provides a sophisticated atmosphere for more casual dining.

Activities & diversions

Mt Lofty’s guest relations manager regales guests nightly with the colourful history of the building and region over welcome drinks at the library.

Mt Lofty Estate’s 30-acre estate offers multiple grassy lawns and terraces for al fresco dining and picnics, outdoor swimming pool, barbecue and wood fired pizza oven, tennis/badminton court and croquet.

Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens and the more challenging Mount Lofty hiking track provide close at hand energetic work outs.

Adelaide is famous for its festivals and markets, particularly The Fringe Festival and the Adelaide Central Markets. Adelaide is also known for its pristine beaches and historical sites such as Hahndorf.

Nowhere else in the world are there four world-class wine regions found within a 50-kilometre radius. These range from the cool climate Adelaide Hills to the maritime McLaren Vale to the historic agricultural area of Langhorn Creek and the high-altitude Eden Valley.

The region is not only home to the largest surviving koala population, but it is also one with extensive Indigenous history.
